Hurricane Lee: Alerts issued along the New England coast as the hurricane turns north

Massachusetts issues Storm Surge Watch for Cape Cod Bay and Nantucket Hurricane and Tropical Storm warnings have been issued for a large portion of the New England coastline on Wednesday, as Hurricane Lee turns northward.

Today, Lee weakened to a Category 2 storm in the Atlantic, but it remained “large and dangerous” according to forecasters.

The storm is 380 miles (610 kilometers) south-southwest of Bermuda, and beach conditions are anticipated to deteriorate by Thursday morning.

According to the National Hurricane Center, the center of Lee will pass west of Bermuda on Thursday and Thursday night before approaching the coasts of New England and Atlantic Canada on Friday and Saturday.

Sunday is a possibility for Lee to make landfall in Nova Scotia as a tropical cyclone, according to forecasters.

A Hurricane Watch has been issued for parts of eastern Maine between Stonington and the United States-Canada border.

Watch Hill, Rhode Island, to Stonington, Maine, inclusive of Block Island, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket, was placed under a Tropical Storm Watch. The National Weather Service has issued a Storm Surge Watch for Cape Cod Bay and Nantucket, Massachusetts.

Behind Lee is Hurricane Margot, the fifth hurricane of the 2023 season, which is forecast to meander over the Atlantic during the next couple of days.
