Niger Coup: Tinubu Interrupts Extraordinary ECOWAS Summit with Closed-door Session

President Bola Tinubu has proclaimed an emergency extraordinary summit of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Heads of State and Authority open.

The summit entered a closed-door session in which ECOWAS Heads of State would make definitive decisions regarding the Republic of Niger, which recently experienced a peaceful coup d’état.

President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone is among the leaders present at the Summit at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. Presidents Umaro Mokhtar Sissoco of Guinea Bissau, Everiste Ndayishimiye of Burundi, and Alassane Ouattara of Côte d’Ivoire were present.

Others observed by our correspondent include Mauritania’s President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani, Ghana’s President Nana Akofo-Ado, Senegal’s President Macky Sall, and Benin Republic’s President Patrice Talon.

Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé Eyadéma, the President of Togo, and Adama Barrow, the President of The Gambia, were still expected at the time this report was filed.
