Nigeria Falls In The Most Recent Military Rankings, While Egypt Takes The Top Spot

According to the latest rankings released in 2023, a new report confirms that Nigeria’s military might have deteriorated.

The Global Firepower Index ranked Nigeria fourth on the list of African nations with formidable military strength and 36th globally.
Egypt and Algeria were rated first and second, respectively, while South Africa’s military was ranked third.

Despite claiming victory over Boko Haram and banditry in the north, the Nigerian Armed Forces did not reach the top three of the recently released global firepower index.

According to the Nigerian Tribune, the Nigerian military finished in fourth place, one position lower than the previous year.

The rankings indicate that the Nigerian military is also ranked 36th in the world, slipping behind Egypt, which is ranked first in Africa and 14th in the world, and Algeria, which is second in Africa and 26th in the world. South Africa, the archrival of Nigeria, ranked third in Africa and 33rd around the globe.

The US Military Maintains the First Place.

Meanwhile, on the international stage, the United States military maintained its position as the finest in the world, closely followed by Russia in second place and Asian superpower China in third place.

India, an additional Asian superpower, was rated fourth, while its former colonial master, the United Kingdom (UK), was surprisingly ranked fifth.

South Korea, Pakistan, Japan, France, and Italy, ranked sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, and tenth, respectively, round out the top ten.

The report provides the parameters from which the rankings were derived, as follows:

“Ranking the nations of the world based on currently available firepower. The finalised Global Firepower ranking below utilises over 60 individual factors to determine a given nation’s Power Index (‘PwrIndx’) score with categories, ranging from the number of military units and financial standing to logistical capabilities and geography.

“For 2023, Nigeria is ranked 36 of 145 out of the countries considered for the annual GFP review. The nation holds a PwrIndx score of 0.5587.”

List of the Top 10 Most Powerful Military Forces in Africa in 2023

In the meantime, the Global Firepower Index (GFI) has published its list of the most powerful military forces in Africa for 2023.

GFI’s rankings place the North African powerhouse Egypt at the top of the list for the second consecutive year.

Its Algerian neighbor is ranked second, while South Africa rounded out the top three.

Similarly, the United States of America has maintained its position as the world’s most potent nation.

The United States military was rated first on the Global Firepower Index for 2023.

The rankings placed Russia second, China third, and India fourth on the list.
