Festus Ogun, a prominent jurist based in Lagos, has stated that Bola Tinubu will not act differently than the previous leader of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari.
Ogun asserted that, like Buhari, Tinubu will not respect the rule of law and human rights in the West African nation.
The attorney characterized the indefinite detention of Godwin Emefiele and Abdulrasheed Bawa as undemocratic.
Ikeja, state of Lagos – On Monday, August 7, renowned constitutional attorney Festus Ogun criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for “the mindless, illegal, and continuous detention” of suspended Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor Godwin Emefiele.
Recall that the Department of State Services (DSS) detained the governor of the central bank on June 10, shortly after President Tinubu suspended him from office and ordered an investigation of the CBN.
Recently, the DSS and Emefiele have had a tumultuous relationship. Simon Maina/AFP & Olukayode Jaiyeola/NurPhoto are credited for these images.
In July, Justice Nicholas Oweibo of the Federal High Court in Lagos granted Emefiele parole in the amount of N20 million, but the DSS quickly apprehended him.
Ogun also criticized President Tinubu for his government’s treatment of Abdulrasheed Bawa, who served as chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) from February 24, 2021, until June 14, 2023, when he was suspended over allegations of corruption.
The attorney posted the following on Twitter:
“From all indications, Bola Tinubu is not going to do anything different from Buhari, especially in respect of respect for the rule of law and human rights. How else can we describe the mindless, illegal, and continuous detention of Emefiele and EFCC’s Bawa? Undemocratic.”
