Sanders wants to replace patents with prizes for drug inventions

Sanders wishes to replace drug patents with cash awards.

Finally, a study will be conducted on Sen. Bernie Sanders’s (I-Vermont) proposal to eliminate drug patents and other intellectual property protections in favor of monetary prizes for inventions. Sanders has advocated the reward approach for many years, ever since he was a House representative.

The provision directing the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to investigate the concept was added to the Pandemic All-Hazards and Preparedness Act one day prior to its passage by Sander’s health committee. Three Republicans opposed the overall measure, which renews several federal biodefense and pandemic-preparation programs.

Sanders is demanding more drug price controls despite the fact that Democrats passed historic legislation last year allowing Medicare to negotiate drug prices and capping seniors’ annual out-of-pocket drug costs. Until the president releases a plan to control drug prices, he is deferring President Biden’s choice to lead the National Institutes of Health.
