According to three sources familiar with his inner circle, Donald Trump’s legal and political teams are preparing for the possibility that the federal grand jury will deliberate on charges against the former president as early as Thursday.
Trump announced on July 18 via social media that he has been notified that he is a target of an investigation into the violence on January 6 and efforts to overturn the 2020 election.
In Washington, D.C., special counsel Jack Smith has been investigating the attack on the U.S. Capitol by a throng of pro-Trump supporters on January 6, 2021, as well as other matters.
Two attorneys with firsthand knowledge of the document have stated that the target letter mentioned three federal statutes related to the deprivation of rights, conspiracy to defraud the United States, and tampering with a witness.
It is unknown whether or not Trump will be indicted, and if so, on what counts.
Last month, a federal grand jury in Florida indicted Donald Trump on criminal charges related to classified documents retained at his Florida residence.
In this case, Trump, who is standing for president again, has pleaded not guilty. Trump aide Walt Nauta, who was also indicted in this case, has also pled not guilty.

In a New York state case, Trump has also pleaded not guilty to 34 felony counts of falsifying business records. This matter is distinct from the federal investigations conducted by Smith. This case was filed by Manhattan district attorney Alvin Bragg, and a grand jury indicted the former president.
Trump referred to the investigation as a “witch hunt” when he announced on January 6 that he had been informed he is a target of the investigation.
