Godwin Emefiele, the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, will reappear in court on Thursday for N6.9 billion in procurement fraud.
Emefiele was accused of giving a CBN employee, Sa’adu Yaro, the director of April 1616 Investment Limited, a corrupt advantage.
If convicted, section 19 of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act of 2000 imposed a mandatory five-year prison sentence without the possibility of a fine.

On Thursday, August 17, The Punch reported that the federal government, through the State Security Service (SSS), will indict the embattled Emefiele and his associates for N6.9 billion in procurement fraud.

In the Maitama neighborhood of Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory High Court would hear the case for arraignment and mention.
Emefiele and a female CBN employee, Sa’adatu Yaro, along with her company, April 1616, Investment Limited, will appear in court on Thursday to face 20 counts of procurement fraud, conferring corrupt benefits on associates, and conspiracy.
Recall that the embattled CBN governor has been in the custody of the SSS since President Bola Tinubu suspended him on June 9 for allegedly granting Yaro, the director of April16161 Investment Ltd, corrupt advantages.
What would occur if Emefiele was convicted?
Emefiele committed an offense in violation of section 19 of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offenses Act of 2000.
The suspended governor of the CBN would be sentenced to five years in prison without the option of a fine if Emefiele were proven guilty and convicted by the court.

Emefiele: The court rejects a new DSS petition to further detain the former CBN governor
The DSS application to legalize the re-arrest and detention of the suspended CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele, has been thrown out by the federal high court in Abuja, as previously reported by Legit.ng.
At the Thursday morning court session, the DSS will file a new motion seeking an injunction to extend Emefiele’s detention by 14 days, citing a new investigative report.
However, after hearing the application of the secret police, the court’s Justice Hamza Muazu dismissed the application for lack of jurisdiction.
